Breakdown

Flood out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk is a classic three level flood concept to the field side, built to overload a Cover 3 or single high shell. The outside receiver runs a deep vertical up the sideline, the TE from the offset side works an out to the flat area at intermediate depth, and the inside receiver runs a flat/angle route underneath while the backside X on the weak side runs a corner route breaking outside. The RB or blocking back stays in to help protect while the offensive line sets up standard pass pro, giving the QB a high to low read from the deep sideline shot down to the underneath flat.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, this is the shell Flood is designed to attack by stacking three levels on one side of the field. If the defense shows two high safeties and rotates late into a Cover 3, the deep sideline throw will be tighter, so be ready to hit the intermediate out or flat route instead. User controlled defenders sitting in the flat or curl zone will jump the underneath routes, so track any manual defender who breaks early toward the flood side before committing to the shorter throw. Man coverage with press alignment on the outside receiver signals a good matchup for the deep vertical route, since flood concepts create natural picks and separation against man defenders working through traffic. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop from the flood side linebacker means he is keying the underneath flat route, which opens a window for the deep corner or vertical shot instead.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a single high safety or Cover 3 shell from the defense.

Pre-snap, check the corner alignment on the flood side. If he is playing off with outside leverage, the deep vertical can win one on one against Cover 3 rotation.

Hot route the underneath flat route into a quick option or hitch if you see man coverage with a linebacker in a tight bump alignment, since the flood concept naturally stresses zone defenders more than man defenders.

Pair this with Four Verticals or RPO Peek Post from the same set to keep the defense honest against both zone drops and aggressive safety rotation.

Take the deep corner or vertical shot on first read against zone, then work back down to the flat route if the safety jumps the deep throw, this keeps the sequence clean and avoids forcing a bad read into a lurking underneath defender.
