Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties splitting the field pre-snap, that alignment tells you Cover 2 is live and the smash out combo will have room underneath the corner. If the slot corner presses at the line and shows no help over the top, expect man coverage and prioritize the crosser as your win route. Track the middle linebacker's initial drop after the snap, a fast flow to the crossing route signals a Tampa 2 look that will require checking down to the low out. Look for a user-controlled safety flashing down toward the crosser, that lurk threat means the smash out flat route becomes the safer answer. Blitz packages with a slot corner blitzing off the edge can disrupt the timing of the deep cross, so account for early pressure by getting the ball out to the quick out route.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties before the snap since this play is specifically designed to attack Cover 2 shells.
Key on the flat defender to the bunch side, if he sinks with the vertical clearout the low out route will be wide open underneath.
Use the Y-Cross as your first read against any single-high look because it will find soft grass in the middle of the field versus zone drops.
Hot route the field-side out to a quick hitch or speed out if you see man coverage with a corner playing tight technique.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical stress and horizontal stress concepts.
