Breakdown

Slot Fade lines up out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk with a four man route concept and a check release blocking assignment. The outside receiver to the boundary runs a fade up the sideline as the deep primary read, while the inside slot receiver on that side runs a corner route breaking to the same sideline to create a natural high low stretch on the cornerback and safety. On the opposite side, the tight end releases on a vertical seam up the middle and the running back checks protection before working an angle route out of the backfield as the underneath outlet. This is a man beater built around the fade and corner combo isolating one on one matchups on the perimeter, with the seam and angle route serving as answers against zone drops. Primary read progression starts with the fade for a one on one shot play, then works to the corner route, and comes down to the seam or angle route if the deep shots are covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the cornerback's alignment before the snap, since press man on the outside receiver signals a jump ball opportunity on the fade while soft coverage suggests the corner route will come open underneath. Key the safety rotation after the snap, since a single high safety rotating late to the fade side confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1 and opens the corner route behind the flat defender. Watch for user controlled safeties sitting on the fade route, since a lurking defender jumping the sideline shot means you should quickly progress to the seam route from the tight end. Identify linebacker depth on the running back's angle route, since shallow linebackers or a nano blitz look mean you need to get the ball out fast on the underneath route rather than holding for the deep shots. Against Cover 2 shells, look for the corner defender sinking under the corner route, which signals the safety must widen and the tight end's seam route becomes the window against the middle of the field.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and long or in red zone fade situations where you want to isolate a fast receiver on a smaller cornerback in single high man coverage.

Pre-snap, check for single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the fade and corner combo on one side overloads the boundary defender with no deep help.

If the defense shows two high safeties presnap, be ready to check the fade route down and prioritize the corner route or seam since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells take away the deep sideline shot.

Hot route the running back's angle route into a flat route if you see man coverage with a linebacker matched up, since it gives a quick underneath answer against blitz pressure.

Pair this play with Four Verticals and RPO Peek Post in the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and quick game answers, forcing safeties to respect every shot play from this formation.
