Breakdown

HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk sends four vertical release routes upfield to clear out the defense while the offensive line initially shows pass pro before releasing to escort the running back on the screen. The HB slips out to the left after a fake pass block, with two linemen pulling out ahead of him to set up blockers in space. This is a classic screen play designed to beat the pass rush and aggressive zone or man pressure, with the primary read being the HB in the flat as soon as the linemen get out in front, using the vertical routes purely as clear-out decoys.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify blitz-heavy fronts or defenses stacking the box, since this screen is designed to counter that exact look. Key on defensive ends and outside linebackers, if they are crashing hard upfield without contain discipline this play will hit big. Post-snap, user a linebacker or safety and spy the backfield instead of biting on the initial pass-rush fake, this stuffs the screen before it develops. Watch for zone coverage with linebackers sitting in short areas, since those defenders can read the screen and close on the HB before blockers arrive. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined edge defenders, contain rushers will string the screen out and limit the play to minimal gain.

Usage Tips

Call this play against defenses showing exotic blitz packages or heavy edge pressure since the delayed release exploits aggressive pass rush lanes.

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the edge presnap, that aggression is what makes the screen hit for big yardage.

Pair this with Four Verticals or Smash Out Y-Cross earlier in a drive to condition the defense into blitzing, then dial up this screen to make them pay.

Use play action or RPO Peek Post on early downs to keep the defense guessing, then mix in this screen on similar downs and distances so the tendency looks identical presnap.

Avoid calling this against zone-heavy shells with linebackers sitting underneath, since sitting defenders can read the screen and blow it up before blockers get set.

Best used on second and long or third and manageable when the defense is more likely to bring pressure or play off coverage.
