Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Y Trio Offset Wk sends four receivers vertically down the field, with the two outside receivers running straight seams up the numbers, the inside slot receiver pushing a vertical seam route between the hashes, and the tight end running a quick out breaking to the sideline off the stick area. Protection is a five man slide with the running back staying in to help block, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to climb through his reads. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to stress the deep middle and attack the seams before safeties can rotate over the top, with the primary read progression going from the inside seam route to the outside verticals, and the tight end out route serving as the checkdown against off coverage or blitz looks.

Defensive Reads

Watch the deep safeties pre-snap: if they are shaded to a two high shell, this play attacks the seams before the safeties can rotate and close, so a user controlled safety sitting in the middle of the field can take away the inside seam read Identify single high safety alignment as a green light for the inside seam route, since the deep middle defender has to choose which vertical threat to carry Key the linebacker depth and drop at the snap: shallow linebackers who sink into the seams instead of widening for the tight end out route can jump the inside route and cause a turnover Look for corners playing off coverage with outside leverage, since this signals zone drops that can be exploited by throwing the seams into the void between the corner and safety Beware of a user controlled lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the intermediate middle zone, as this play can be shut down by a well timed zone drop that squats on the inside seam and forces the quarterback to hold the ball too long

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties splitting the field, attack the seams between the numbers and the hash before they can close the window

Against single high safety looks (Cover 3), target the inside seam route first since the middle linebacker or hook defender has to widen to cover the flat, opening up the throwing lane down the pipe

Use the tight end out route as a hot route answer versus zero blitz or man pressure looks, since it clears out quickly and gives you a built in checkdown against blitzes

Motion the offset tight end or a receiver pre-snap to confirm man versus zone coverage before the snap, since a defender following the motion man is a clear man coverage tell

Pair this play with RPO Peek Post or Y Lead Read Option earlier in a drive to get the linebackers and safeties biting downhill, then hit Four Verticals off play action tendencies for an explosive shot play
