The diagram shows the HB running an angled path behind the QB while the QB reads the mesh point, giving him the option to keep the ball on a designed run lane or hand off based on the defensive end's crash. This is a straightforward run play designed to attack numbers advantages, not a pass concept, so it beats light boxes and overaggressive edge defenders rather than any specific man or zone coverage shell.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive end's first step after the snap since he is the primary conflict defender in this read option scheme. A crashing DE means the QB should pull and run, while a DE sitting outside means the HB should get the handoff into the interior lanes. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with light boxes are the most vulnerable to this play since there is less immediate help at the mesh point. Defenses that spy the QB with a linebacker or play scrape exchange technique on the edge take away the keeper element and force the offense into the handoff every time. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, since that signals run support is coming and the offense should consider audibling to a pass play instead.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive end alignment before the snap because his first step after the snap determines your read, if he crashes down on the HB pull the ball and attack the edge.
Use this play on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep defenses honest against pass-heavy calls from the rest of the Y Trio Offset Wk set.
Pair this with RPO Peek Post or RPO Zone Peek in the same set so defenses have to respect both the run threat and the quick pass options off similar formation looks.
If the defense stacks the box with extra linebackers, motion your slot receiver pre-snap to check for man coverage before committing to the run.
Sequence this play after Mtn WR Option or Motion WR Option to condition the defense to bite on perimeter action, then hit them with the interior conflict of this read option.
