Mtn Z Spot is a Spot concept run out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk with pre-snap motion, giving you a classic Cover 3 beater. Off the diagram, the outside receiver runs a corner route up the numbers, the slot defender works a quick settle in the flat before releasing outward, and the motioning receiver on the far side runs a shallow drag across the field to the opposite flat. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to attack the deflated deep third, works down to the settle/flat combo underneath, and checks the drag as a final outlet against man coverage leverage.
Pre-snap, key the deep safeties, two high alignment suggests Cover 2 or Cover 4 which can cap the corner route, so be ready to check down. Watch the corner or nickel defender's reaction to the pre-snap motion, if he trails across the formation it is man coverage and the drag route becomes a high value throw against trailing leverage. Post-snap, identify the flat defender's drop, if he sits on the settle route the corner route window opens up outside, if he jumps the corner throw underneath immediately. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 buzz or robber concepts where a linebacker or safety drops into the shallow crossing lane, since it clogs the drag and settle routes. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking at the intermediate level, since a spotted deep safety or a jumped underneath route can bait quarterbacks into a costly interception on the corner throw.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and can lean on the drag as a rhythm throw.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the corner route since it stretches the deep third defender and creates natural spacing with the underneath settle route.
Hot route the flat defender into a quick out if you see Cover 2 shells since the corner route can get squeezed by an overlapping safety.
Best called on second and medium or third and short to medium distances where the underneath spacing routes give you a high percentage completion versus zone drops.
Pair this play with Smash Out Y-Cross or Curls Combo in your call sheet, since both attack similar zone landmarks but flip the deep shot to the opposite hash, keeping defenders honest on shell rotation.
