Breakdown

Mtn PA Cross Switch is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk that sells the run fake before releasing a switch-release crosser concept. The two receivers on the play side cross paths near the line, with one running a deep crosser to the opposite hash and the other bending it into a shallow drag underneath, while the backside receiver runs a deep comeback along the sideline and the outlet back releases into a shallow flat route away from the play. The primary read starts with the deep crosser coming across the middle off the switch release, working down to the shallow drag or flat option if the crosser is taken away by a linebacker or safety rotating over the top.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap. If they bite hard on the play-action fake, the deep crosser will have a clean run through the middle of the field. Key the safety over the top. Single-high defenses that stay true to the fake let the crosser split the zone, while two-high safeties that stay disciplined can rob the crosser and force the check down. Watch for man coverage defenders trailing the switch release. Confusion at the release point often creates a natural pick, so look for a defender getting rerouted into traffic. Identify blitz packages pre-snap. If the defense brings pressure off the edge, the shallow drag and flat route become quick answers before the protection breaks down. Beware of a spy or hook zone defender sitting in the middle. That defender can undercut the shallow crosser if you are late reading the initial route by the deep man.

Usage Tips

Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers, especially on early downs when defenses respect the run out of this personnel grouping.

Check the middle of the field before the snap. Against single-high safety looks the deep crosser has room to work behind the linebackers, while against two-high shells you should lean on the shallow drag and flat combo underneath.

Hot route the backside comeback into a deep out or hitch if you are facing press man coverage to give yourself an easy sideline throw against aggressive corners.

Pair this with Mtn PA Cross earlier in a drive so the defense sees the same run action and crosser look, then hit them with the switch release variant to exploit linebackers jumping the initial crosser.

Best used on second and medium or third and short where defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake, opening up the switch release crosser against man coverage or bracket looks.
