Mtn WR Swing runs a pre-snap motion man beater out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk. The motion receiver sweeps across to the backfield and releases as a swing route to the flat while the outside receiver on that side runs a corner route up the sideline, creating a natural high low stretch on the flat defender. The backside X runs a deep vertical to hold the safety, and the offensive line slides protection toward the motion side to account for edge pressure. Primary read is the swing route in the flat, then the corner route behind it if a linebacker or nickel jumps the underneath throw.
Watch the flat defender or slot corner as the motion man crosses, if he stays home in the flat and does not chase, that is a zone shell and the swing will get contested. Key the linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who flow hard with the motion are vulnerable to the corner route breaking outside and over the top of them. User the nickel or slot corner manually to sit on the swing route and force the quarterback to hold the ball and climb to the corner route. Blitz packages that send extra pressure from the motion side can disrupt the timing of the swing since the protection has to account for the free rusher, look for overload blitzes off that edge. Press man coverage on the corner route with a deep half safety over the top takes away the vertical option and forces the offense to live on the swing route underneath all game.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know it is man coverage and the swing is nearly automatic. Against zone shells, hold the swing route as a checkdown and progress to the corner route sitting behind the flat defender for a bigger chunk gain. This play works best on early downs or third and short since the swing is a high percentage completion that keeps you on schedule. Pair this call with Mtn WR Option or Motion WR Option from the same formation so the defense sees identical motion and alignment but has to defend a different route concept each time. If the defense starts jumping the swing route with linebackers, sequence into Mtn PA Flood or Mtn PA Cross to attack the space that opens up behind the aggressive underneath defenders.
