Breakdown

RPO Alert Bubble is an inside zone RPO out of the Shotgun Wing Stack Wk formation with 12 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive line executing an inside zone blocking scheme while the HB takes a zone track behind the line, and on the perimeter a receiver runs a bubble screen route while the outside receiver stems vertically to clear space. The QB reads the alert defender (typically an overhang linebacker or slot corner) at the mesh point: if that defender crawls or bites on the run action, the QB pulls and throws the bubble; if he sits or widens, the QB hands off inside zone.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the alignment of the slot corner or overhang linebacker since he is the alert key for this RPO. If that defender is stacked tight to the line expecting run support, throw the bubble instantly before he can recover. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender sitting the bubble route since aggressive human players will often jump the screen and abandon run fits, opening the inside zone lane. This play struggles against disciplined zone coverage where the alert defender stays home in his zone drop, forcing you into a tougher zone read decision. Beware of nano blitzes off the edge that bring pressure faster than the mesh point read, since that can disrupt both the handoff and the bubble throw timing.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to identify whether the slot defender is playing run support or sitting in space before the snap.

If the defense shows a two high shell with light box counts, lean run because the numbers favor inside zone.

If you see a single high safety or the alert defender crashing hard on run fakes, key the bubble throw immediately for a guaranteed easy completion.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant to give yourself a second answer against man coverage if the defense rotates late.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert Bubble and RPO Read Bubble in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which alert defender you are attacking, forcing conflict every snap.
