RPO Alert Bubble out of Shotgun Wing Stack Wk gives the QB a true run pass option key. The offensive line and RB run the base run scheme to the right while the slot receiver stacked to the left runs an arrow route flaring outside as the bubble alert, with the outside receiver working a crossing route over the top to pull coverage away from the flare. This is an RPO built to attack overaggressive run fits: if the alert defender crashes down on the run action, the QB pulls and fires the bubble/arrow route to the flanking receiver for a numbers advantage on the perimeter, and if that defender sits or widens, the QB hands off into the run play. Primary read progression is alert defender first (flow to the bubble key), run lane second.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alert defender pre-snap: if he is lined up tight to the box with no eyes on the bubble receiver, he is likely to crash, making this an easy pull and throw for the offense. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that keep the overhang defender in a soft flat drop take away the bubble throw and force the QB into the run, so sit and read the run fit if you are on defense. Man coverage on the outside crosser can be exploited by user-controlled defenders jumping the route, but leaving the bubble flat uncovered against RPO concepts is the bigger risk. Blitzes that bring extra defenders off the edge on the run side can get gashed if the alert key still crashes, since the RPO throw negates numbers advantages in the box. As the defender assigned to the flat or bubble area, stay disciplined and do not bite on run action; squeezing too far inside opens the easy pitch and catch read every time.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify the alert defender (usually the overhang or slot corner/linebacker) responsible for the bubble side before the snap, since his leverage determines whether you throw or hand off.
Use this against defenses that show aggressive run blitz or crashing linebackers, since the bubble read punishes overcommitted flow to the run side instantly.
Hot route the crossing receiver into a deeper dig or post on obvious passing downs to stress zone beaters if the defense starts sitting on the bubble every snap.
