Mtn PA Flood

Breakdown

Mtn PA Flood is a play-action concept out of Shotgun 12 personnel that sells the run fake before flooding one side of the field with three route levels. The flood combo typically stacks a deep vertical, an intermediate out or corner, and a shallow flat route to overload one zone defender and stretch the field horizontally and vertically. This is primarily a zone beater since it attacks a single side with three defenders forced to cover three levels, though it can also work against man coverage if the flat route creates natural leverage against a linebacker. The primary read progression starts high to low: check the deep shot first, then work down to the intermediate route, and finally the flat route as your checkdown against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strong safety and outside linebacker alignment on the flood side, since Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with a deep half or deep third defender are most vulnerable to the three level stretch. Watch for a single high safety rotating late to the flood side, which signals Cover 3 and tells you the flat defender will be isolated against two routes stacked on top of him. Key the flow of the linebackers after the run fake, if they bite hard on the play-action the intermediate route will come open in the void they vacate. Beware of Cover 2 Man or man match schemes with a robber underneath, since a user controlled defender sitting in the flood zone can jump the shallow or intermediate route and turn it into a pick six. Look for disguised blitzes with a nano blitz package up front, since the play-action fake holds your protection an extra beat and can get your quarterback hit if the offensive line does not account for an extra rusher off the edge.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick flick to identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell before the snap, since Mtn PA Flood punishes two high shells that rotate late into the flood side.

Hot route the backside receiver into a drag or slant if you see man coverage across the board, giving yourself a rhythm throw away from the flood concept if the defense overloads that side with extra defenders.

This play hits best on second and medium to second and long or first down situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells and respect the play-action fake off Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn Outside Zone tendencies you have established.

Pair this call with Mtn Spot or Mtn Dagger earlier in a series so the defense has to respect both traditional dropback concepts and the run fake, making the flood concept hit even harder once linebackers start biting on zone run action.

If the user jumps a flat defender to take away the shallow route, immediately climb to the intermediate out or corner route since the flood is designed to have the intermediate defender in conflict between the flat and deep routes.
