Mtn PA Verticals is a play-action shot play out of the Shotgun Wing Stack Wk set designed to attack aggressive linebackers and single-high safety shells. The play-action fake from 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE) freezes the box, then the receivers and tight ends stem into vertical routes to stretch the field deep. Your primary read progression starts with the deep outside verticals on the boundary, then works to the seam or inside vertical from the TE stack if the safety bites on the run fake, giving you a true man beater with big play upside against Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since single high tells you the defense is vulnerable to verticals down the sideline. Watch cornerback press versus off coverage at the line, press man leaves receivers exposed to double moves but off coverage means you need to win with timing on the vertical stem. Post-snap, track linebacker reaction to the play-action fake, if they crash hard on the run fake it opens the intermediate seam and shallow crossers. Look for a user-controlled defender dropping into a deep lurk or spy position, since that signals the defense expects the shot play and will jump the vertical route. This play struggles against a disciplined Cover 3 with a deep middle safety who does not bite on the fake, so if you see that shell holding its ground, consider checking down or resetting the play at the line.
Check the safety depth pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheating up toward the box, this play is primed to hit over the top.
Use the play-action fake to bait linebackers, then immediately scan the seam route since that is often the first window to open against zone drops.
Hot route the underneath TE into a shallow drag or hook if you diagnose Cover 2 or Cover 4, giving yourself a checkdown when the verticals are blanketed.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short after establishing Mtn Inside Zone or Same Side Zone, since defenses will sell out on the run fake once they respect the ground game.
Pair this with Mtn Spot or Mtn Dagger in your play-calling sequence, running verticals first to soften deep coverage, then coming back with the shorter combo route once safeties start creeping up to respect the play-action pass.
