Mtn Inside Zone is the base zone run out of the Shotgun Wing Stack Wk set in 12 personnel, giving you two extra blockers at the tight end spots to help seal the edges. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading the first level defenders and working combo blocks up to the linebackers, while the HB presses the mesh point and reads the frontside double team before deciding to bang it inside, bend it outside, or cut back against flow. Since this is a run play with no play-action tag, the primary read progression is the HB keying the play side guard and center double team, then working through the alley based on how the linebackers flow and whether the backside defender gets sealed for a cutback lane.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the Mike linebacker is stacked tight or walked out, since a light box (six or fewer) is where this run hits hardest. Identify the safety alignment before the snap: two high shells with soft linebacker depth tend to give up the most yardage because the backside defender is more concerned with pass responsibilities than crashing down. Post-snap, watch for user controlled defenders flying downhill immediately, since aggressive user blitzers can be washed out of the play with the frontside double team if the HB stays patient. Against 46 fronts, odd stacks, or heavy blitz packages with linebackers crowding the line pre-snap, this play loses value quickly since the numbers in the box outweigh your blockers. Watch the backside defensive end and any late-flowing linebacker for cutback lanes, since overpursuit to the play side is the biggest tell that a cutback will hit for extra yardage.
Run this out of 12 personnel when you want a numbers advantage against base fronts or 4-3 under looks since the extra tight end gives you a lead blocker to climb to the second level.
Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider hot routing a tight end into a quick out or checking to RPO Zone Alert Bubble instead to make them pay for overloading the run fit.
Use this play early in a series on first and ten to set up Mtn Outside Zone and Mtn PA Verticals later, since all three plays share the same initial line steps and backfield action, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Mix in Mtn PA Flood and RPO Read Cntr from the same set after two or three successful zone runs so the safeties start cheating up, opening explosive shots off the same look.
On third and short, trust the frontside double team and stay patient behind the mesh point rather than forcing an outside bounce, since defenses in short yardage typically crash hard and leave a cutback lane.
