RPO Read Slant Bubble out of Shotgun Wing Stack Wk gives the QB a true run pass option key off the play side flat defender. The slot receiver runs a bubble screen while the outside receiver breaks on a slant behind it, and the backfield action holds the defense with a run fake read to the play side. This is a run pass option built to attack light boxes and overaggressive flat defenders, with the primary read being the bubble first, then the slant if the flat defender sits, and the run fake underneath if the box stays light.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat or curl-flat defender pre-snap, if he is aligned wide and deep he is sitting on the bubble and you should key the run. Man coverage on the slant receiver with no underneath help is a green light to throw the slant immediately since the route wins quickly off the line. Zone shells with a sinking corner over the bubble receiver take away the easy screen and force the QB to trust the run key. User controlled defenders lurking in the throwing lane of the slant can jump the route, so read the depth of any user flowing toward the line before committing. Aggressive run blitzes with a light box invite the run key, but a disciplined defender staying home in the flat area shuts down both the bubble and the run fake.

Usage Tips

Check the defender aligned over the bubble receiver before the snap, if he is sitting inside expecting run he is late to the flat and the bubble is wide open.

If the flat defender flies out to the bubble immediately, pull the slant behind him for an easy conversion since he vacated his zone.

Count the box before the snap, six or fewer defenders in the box means you should stay on the run key and let the RPO logic hand it off.

Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Read Bubble in the same set so the defense cannot sit on one specific bubble read, forcing linebackers to hesitate every snap.

Use this on early downs in normal personnel packages to stay ahead of the chains, since the built in conflict read punishes defenses that crash the box to stop the run.
