Defensive Reads

Zone shells with a flat defender sitting soft in space are vulnerable to the bubble throw for an easy leverage completion. Fast flowing linebackers who crash hard on zone run action open up cutback lanes but also open the bubble read if the quarterback pulls it. Blitzing the edge or overloading the box can bait the quarterback into the bubble throw, so disciplined flat defenders who hold their zone shut this play down.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense is showing six or more in the box, key the flat defender immediately for the bubble throw.

Use this on early downs in run heavy personnel to keep defenses honest, since a clean zone run hits just as hard as the screen if the numbers favor the run.

If the corner or slot defender crashes down on run action, pull the ball and get the bubble out fast before the flat defender can recover.
