Exit Double Screen is a screen play out of the Shotgun Wing Stack Wk set designed to attack aggressive pass rushes and blitz-heavy defenses. The design releases blockers to both the perimeter and interior, giving you a true double screen look where the running back and a receiver both work as bail-out options while the offensive line sets up screen blocks in front of them. Your primary read progression starts by identifying which side the defense overpursues on the snap, then working from the wide screen action first before checking down to the secondary screen if the numbers are not there.

Defensive Reads

Watch for user controlled defenders spying the backfield or sitting in a lurk technique near the flat, since these are the biggest threats to blow up both screen options. Check linebacker depth at the snap, if they are crashing hard downhill on run action or blitzing off the edge, the screen blockers will have a clean path to set up in front of the ball carrier. Zone heavy shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined linebackers sitting in their zones can shut this down quickly, since those defenders read screen action and jump the throwing lanes. Man coverage with aggressive press corners tends to open up the perimeter screen big, since those defenders are locked up on receivers and cannot help in space. Post snap, track whether the defensive line is selling out on an inside rush or stunt, since that hesitation up front gives your blockers time to get outside and seal the alley for the screen.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs or after you have shown a heavy dose of RPO Zone Peek, RPO Alert Bubble, or RPO Read Bubble from this same set so the defense is conditioned to bite on quick game reads.

Use it as a changeup against defenses that bring pressure packages or nano blitzes, since the blockers releasing into space punish aggressive edge rushers and stunts.

Presnap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 0 or Cover 1 man with safeties crashing downhill, since this play thrives when defenders flow hard upfield.

Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag if you see a spy or a defender sitting flat footed at the second level, giving you a built in outlet if both screens are covered.

Sequence this play after HB Power or Same Side Zone to keep linebackers honest on run fits, then hit them with the screen action once they start flowing fast to the line of scrimmage.
