Mtn Spot is a classic Spot concept out of Shotgun 12 personnel, built to attack zone coverage with a high-low read to the strong side. The concept combines a corner route, a spot/hitch settling underneath, and a flat route to create a three-level stretch that forces zone defenders to choose between levels. This is a zone beater at its core, though the underneath spot sits down in soft spots against man coverage too, and the primary read progression goes corner to spot to flat, working outside in and settling on the first open throwing lane.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender first since he determines whether the spot or the flat route stays open, if he sinks with the spot the flat is your outlet. Read the deep third or deep half defender's depth at the snap, a shallow drop means the corner route has a throwing window before he can flip and run. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate zone, this play is vulnerable to a user-controlled linebacker jumping the spot route if he reads your eyes early. Against man coverage, key the corner's leverage on the outside receiver, if he plays inside shade the corner route wins outside, if he plays outside the spot has room to sit down. This concept struggles against Cover 2 man or press man with underneath help since the flat and spot both get squeezed, so check the pre-snap alignment for a jammed corner and safety rotation before committing to this call.

Usage Tips

Look for two-high safety shells pre-snap since the corner route occupies the deep defender while the spot settles into the vacated underneath zone. If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 hard shells, prioritize the flat route since the corner window closes fast against a deep third defender. Use this play on second and medium to third and short so the spot route sitting down becomes an easy conversion throw. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if the defense shows blitz, giving you a rhythm throw away from pressure. Pair Mtn Spot with Mtn PA Verticals and Mtn Dagger in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the shorter spot concept and the deep shots off similar formation and personnel, keeping linebackers honest against both run action and vertical stems.
