Breakdown

RPO Zone Peek is a run-pass option out of Shotgun 12 personnel that pairs an inside zone run with a peek route (typically a slant or quick in from the backside slot) that the quarterback can throw off the linebacker or safety reaction. The blocking scheme is inside zone with the offensive line stepping in unison, giving the QB a clean run track if the box is light. This play is designed as a zone beater since the RPO read keys the second level defender: if the peek defender bites on the run fake or sits in a soft zone window, the quarterback pulls and throws the peek route quickly, otherwise the ball gets handed off into the zone run lanes.

Defensive Reads

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the tackle box versus your blockers to decide if the give is live

Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short since the run action holds linebackers and keeps the play balanced in your call sheet

If the defense shows a two high shell with light box numbers, hand the ball off into the inside zone lanes rather than force the peek throw

Hot route the peek receiver to a quick slant or speed out against man coverage to create instant separation if you see man alignment on the slot

Pair this with Inside Zone and RPO Read Bubble in the same set so defenders cannot sit on one specific run or RPO tendency

Snap the ball quickly after diagnosing linebacker depth since a hesitant read defender is the green light to throw the peek immediately
