RPO Read Cntr out of Shotgun Wing Stack Wk pairs a counter run scheme up front with a single outside receiver running a comeback/out breaking route toward the sideline. The offensive line and wing TE execute the counter blocking scheme to open up the running lane on the edge while the QB reads the alley defender or overhang to decide whether to hand off or pull and throw the perimeter route. This is a run first RPO built to punish light boxes and aggressive flow defenders, with the throw acting as a pressure release against defenders who crash down on the counter action.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers cheating downhill before the snap, that aggressive depth signals they intend to crash the counter, which is exactly when the QB should pull and throw. Man coverage on the perimeter receiver with no help over the top is a green light to throw since the comeback breaks away from trail technique. Zone shells with a corner sitting at a soft angle can bait the throw into a defender who is reading QB eyes, so counter with the run if you see a cornerback sinking into a zone drop. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge can outrun the counter blocking scheme, so if you see overload pressure alignment pre snap, be ready to get the ball out fast rather than trusting the run fake. A disciplined defensive end or edge defender who stays home on the counter action and does not chase the fake will consistently blow this play up, forcing the QB into a rushed decision.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap, if there are six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light to let the counter hit. Identify the alley or overhang defender, that player is your true pre snap key for the RPO read since he determines run or pass. Use hot routes sparingly here, the single route on the perimeter is designed to be a simple win against an aggressive flow defender so keep it clean rather than adding extra motion that tips your hand. This play works best on early downs (1st and 2nd) when defenses are still playing base fronts and have not started disguising blitz packages. Pair this with RPO Counter Read and RPO Peek Slant in the same set to keep defenders guessing between counter action, bubble reads and slant reads, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap.
