Breakdown

Wheel Post Drag out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset gives you a five-man route concept built to stress both man and zone coverage at every level. The backside receiver runs a deep corner-breaking route while the three receivers on the strong side clear out with a deep post, a wheel route working from the flat up the sideline, and an underneath drag crossing the field. With a wheel, post and drag stacked together, this is a natural man beater against man coverage (the wheel torches linebackers and nickel defenders in man) but the drag and post combo also stretches zone defenses horizontally and vertically. Primary read progression starts with the wheel route out of the backfield or slot against man coverage, moves to the post if the safety bites on the wheel, and comes down to the drag as the checkdown against zone or when the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, since Cover 1 and Cover 0 leave the wheel route isolated on a linebacker with no safety help. Watch the slot or nickel defender's initial reaction at the snap, if he sinks into a zone drop instead of matching the wheel man to man, that route becomes an easy pitch and catch. Key linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash the drag route open up the post behind them for a big chunk play. User the deep safety in Cover 3 to rob the post route, this forces the quarterback to check down to the drag underneath. Disguise blitz packages with delayed linebacker pressure can disrupt the timing of the wheel route release, since it takes longer to develop than the drag. Cover 2 with sticky corners on the outside can shut down the backside corner route, forcing all reads into the strong side concept.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since the wheel route is the biggest explosive play threat against linebackers or safeties in man.

Motion or send the wheel route defender in a hot route if you see zone drops, using it as a checkdown outlet instead of forcing it downfield.

Use this play on second or third and medium situations where the drag route gives you a reliable underneath answer if the deep shots are covered.

Pair this play with Double Cross or PA Double Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep crossing concepts and post-heavy shots.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, key the flow of the deep safety toward the post before committing to the wheel route sideline throw.

Combine with Mesh Spot earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect underneath crossers, then hit the wheel route deep when they jump the drag.
