Mtn Cross X Post lines up out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset with 12 personnel and shows a deep crosser paired with a post and two vertical clear-outs from the left side. The X receiver runs a deep post from the right, the inside slot breaks into a crossing route underneath that drifts to the boundary, and the two left side receivers push vertical stems that split the deep safeties and clear the crosser's throwing lane. The backside flat route underneath the crosser gives a checkdown option, making this a man beater built to isolate the post against single high shells while the crosser attacks any leftover space in zone drops. Primary read progression starts with the post shot on the X, works down to the crosser working left to right, and ends with the flat as the checkdown.
Watch for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly before the snap, this Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell forces you to rely on the crosser sitting in the intermediate window rather than the post. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he sinks deep into the crosser's lane you need to check off it quickly to the post or flat. Identify man coverage by watching the corner over the X, if he opens his hips early to run with the post stem you have a favorable one on one matchup. Look for a lurking safety or user controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this is the biggest threat to the underneath route and should push your eyes to the post or checkdown. Recognize blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the crosser and flat routes develop quickly enough to beat a five or six man rush if the quarterback gets the ball out fast.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety cheat toward the post side the crosser should be your first read instead.
Use motion pre-snap to identify man coverage, if the defender follows across the formation you can trust the post to win one on one against a trailing corner.
Hot route the checkdown flat route into a quick out if you are facing a hard blitz look, this gives you a built in answer against pressure without changing the shot play.
Pair this call with Mtn Mesh Spot or Double Cross in the same set so the defense has to respect both crossing traffic and vertical shots, keeping linebackers and safeties honest.
Best used on second and medium or third and long when you need a chunk play, since the deep post and crosser combo takes time to develop and needs the extra window that longer down and distance situations provide.
