Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset sends four receivers vertically up the field to attack every deep zone landmark at once. The diagram shows both outside receivers stemming up the sideline, the inside slot receiver climbing the seam and breaking away from the safety, and the running back releasing on a checkdown/flat option underneath while the offensive line holds up in pass protection. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to stress the deep safeties and overload the middle of the field, with the primary read progressing from the seam route to the outside verticals and back down to the running back if the deep routes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Check both safeties before the snap, if they are aligned deep and split evenly you are likely facing Cover 2 or Cover 4, which allows the seam route to sit down in the void between them A single high safety at depth signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, in this case the deep middle throw to the seam runner is the fastest developing window Watch the cornerbacks at the snap, if they open their hips and run with the outside verticals in man coverage, look to win with the receiver who has the cleanest release Key the underneath linebackers and nickel defenders, if they sink deep into the throwing lanes instead of staying disciplined in shorter zones, check the ball down to the running back on the checkdown A disguised blitz that shows two deep safeties presnap and rotates to one deep post snap can suffocate this concept, if you see late rotation get the ball out immediately to the shortest available route Press man coverage at the line with no help over the top is the matchup you want, beat the jam and the verticals should separate down the field

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether you are facing two deep safeties or one, since this concept is built specifically to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells that leave the seams or the deep middle exposed

If the safety cheats to one side of the field, hot route the backside vertical into a slight sit or comeback to create an easy throwing lane against a rotated shell

Use this play on early downs or in two minute situations when you want an explosive shot down the field, since the design is not friendly to check downs on third and long against tight coverage

Against Cover 3, target the seam receiver who splits the difference between the flat defender and the deep third safety, that throw window opens the fastest

Pair this with Slants Y Stick or Mesh Spot from the same set so that after showing verticals once, the defense has to respect the deep shots and bites less on shorter combo routes underneath

Motion or a quick pre-snap shift can help identify man versus zone, if defenders shadow across the formation you know it is man and should look immediately to your best matchup on the outside
