Stick Nod Vertical comes out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset with 12 personnel, showing two receivers stacked tight to the boundary running a nod and vertical combo, a flat runner sitting on the sideline route underneath, and a wing releasing on a corner route from the backfield side. The lone in-line defender on the strong side kicks out to seal edge pressure while the vertical stem occupies the deep defenders, opening the nod route as a hesitation read against zone drops. This is a man and zone beater built on the classic Stick concept: the primary read starts with the flat route for an immediate rhythm throw, progresses to the nod for a sit-down window against off coverage, and finishes with the vertical or corner as the shot play if the defense bites on the shallow routes.
Watch the strong side corner presnap, if he is playing off with soft outside shade the flat route wins immediately. Key the underneath linebacker responsible for the stick and nod area, if he sinks too deep the flat is wide open, if he stays shallow the nod sits behind him. Identify two high safety shells, this concept thrives against Cover 2 and Cover 4 because the vertical stretches the deep defenders vertically while the nod exploits the intermediate seam. Watch for user blitz pressure off the edge, since the kick out block is designed to handle a wide rusher, a delayed inside blitz can beat this protection. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can jump the flat route and blow up the first read, so be ready to progress quickly to the nod or vertical against three deep shells.
Presnap, count defenders to the strong side flat and stick area to confirm if you have a numbers advantage before the snap.
If the corner shows hard outside leverage or press man, hot route the flat runner to a quick out or speed out to beat the jam instantly.
Against zone shells with deep safeties showing two high, trust the nod route to sit down in the void behind underneath linebackers for an easy completion.
Use this play on early downs or third and short since the flat and stick routes give a high floor conversion while the vertical keeps deep safeties honest.
Pair this with Slants Y Stick or Jailbreak Screen from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and shot plays, then dial up the vertical shot once they start jumping the short routes.
