Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive tackle alignment pre-snap, if he is shaded hard into the play side gap the trap block will erase him and open a big crease. Key the linebacker depth, shallow linebackers crashing downhill get trapped easily while linebackers sitting back read the pulling guard and can fill the hole in time. This play struggles against gap sound defensive fronts that stay disciplined and do not overpursue the initial flow, so a defense reading trap and staying home kills the run before it starts. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the middle of the field or sitting in the hole, since a smart user read can jump the trap lane and blow up the play at the mesh point. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the exact gap being trapped can beat this play if the offense fails to identify the blitz pre-snap and adjust protection.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle area.
Look for linebackers sitting flat footed or crashing hard inside since the trap block is designed to punish overaggressive defensive tackles and blitzing linebackers.
Use manual control on the RB after the handoff so you can press the trap hole and cut off the puller instead of letting the CPU logic bounce it too early.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Power O earlier in a series so the defense commits to reading gap flow, then hit them with 0 1 Trap once you see the interior defenders keying run fits aggressively.
Best called on early downs or short yardage situations where a light box and predictable run fits from the defense make the trap block easy to spring.
