Mtn Drive HB Trail

Breakdown

Mtn Drive HB Trail is a man beater out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset that leans on the classic drive concept, stacking a shallow crosser underneath a deeper in-breaking route to create natural rub separation against man coverage. The HB Trail tag sends the back on a delayed trail route out of the backfield, giving you a built-in check-down against blitz looks or a leak-out option if the underneath defenders bite on the crossers. Primary read progression starts with the drive combo (shallow to deep-in) working from the play side, then works back to the HB trail as your outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Check linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow they can jump the drive route, so look to the deep in or the HB trail instead. Watch for man coverage indicators like corners lined up inside or outside shade with no help over the top, since the rub from the drive concept will spring the shallow route open against man. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with safeties sitting deep, the drive concept underneath will have room before the safeties can close, so trust the initial read. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone or spying the middle can jump the drive route, so be ready to reset to the HB trail if you see a defender sitting on the crosser. Watch blitz timing off the edge, if the offensive line cannot pick up a hot rusher the HB trail becomes your first read instead of the third, since it releases quickly into the vacated area.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts to man or stays static, since the drive concept thrives against man coverage with the natural rub.

If you see two high safeties, work the shallow drive route first since the deep in behind it will have room before the safety can rotate down.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if the defense shows Cover 3 to give yourself a fast zone beater option away from the drive concept.

This play pairs well with Mtn Bench Spacing and Mtn Mesh Spot in a play-action sequence, since all three attack the underneath middle and can set up the defense for an eventual Mtn Jailbreak Screen once linebackers start crashing downhill.

Best called on second or third and medium, since the drive concept needs a beat to develop and the HB trail gives you a safety valve against a well timed blitz.
