Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset (12 personnel) shows a classic mesh concept underneath with a vertical shot outside. The two inside receivers cross low across the field creating a natural rub against man coverage, with one settling into a spot/sit route at the sticks while the other continues to the flat and up the sideline. The outside receiver runs a deep go route to stretch the defense vertically, while the backside X clears out over the top. This is a true man beater built around the mesh traffic, but the spot route sitting down against zone drops also gives it enough zone beater equity for Cover 3 shells, with the primary read progressing from the deep go to the mesh crossers underneath and finally the spot route as the checkdown.
Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he sprints to the mesh point without hesitation he is likely spying or blitzing rather than dropping into a zone. Watch the deep safety shell before the snap, two safeties deep signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the mesh underneath becomes your priority read over the go route. Track the corner covering the go route route, if he presses at the line and turns his back to run with the receiver you have a clean vertical win against man coverage. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone near the mesh crossers, that lurk threat can jump both underneath routes and force you to work the spot route late or check it down. This play struggles against a hard Cover 3 buzz with linebackers sinking fast into the underneath zones, since the mesh has nowhere to work and the spot route gets squeezed by the zone defender dropping into that exact window.
Take a pre-snap look at the corner over the deep go route, if he is playing off man or shows single-high safety rotation this is a great shot play opportunity. Use the mesh crossers to create natural picks against man defenders, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz looks where defenders have no help over the top. Hot route the spot runner into a deeper sit route against Cover 3 to sit down in the intermediate hole between the underneath zone and deep third. Pair this play with Y Lead Read Opt or Power O out of the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs before hitting them with Mesh Spot on second or third down passing situations. Best called on second and medium to third and medium, since the mesh action needs a beat to develop and you want enough field to work the spot route as a checkdown.
