Mtn Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset (12 personnel) is a classic mesh concept blended with a spot route underneath, designed to attack man and zone coverage alike. Two shallow crossers create the mesh point to hang up man defenders while a spot route (curl-flat-hitch combo) settles into the underneath zone voids, with a corner or dig route working the intermediate level as a coverage stretch. The primary read starts with the mesh crossers against man leverage, then works to the spot/flat combo if the defense sits in zone, and finally to the deep breaking route if the coverage bites on the short stuff.
Watch the mike linebacker and nickel defender at the snap since their depth and drop angle tell you whether they are sitting on the spot route or bailing to cover the mesh crossers. Man coverage defenders who fight through the mesh point late usually get picked, so any rub or natural traffic there is your green light to fire the mesh route. Against zone, key the underneath linebackers and safeties rotating down since a sunk safety usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 match, which opens up the corner or dig route behind the spot combo. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are vulnerable because the mesh action clears out defenders and creates natural picks, but be alert for a lurking hot defender sitting in the mesh window who can jump the crossing routes. Disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at proper depth and use a robber technique in the middle of the field can shut this down, so have your check down or scramble drill ready if the spot window closes.
Use this play on early downs or 3rd and short to medium since the mesh and spot combo give you a quick answer against almost any coverage look. Check pre-snap for man coverage by identifying if corners are lined up in press or trail alignment, since the mesh crossers will rub off defenders and create natural separation. If the defense shows a two-high shell, expect the underneath zone defenders to sit on the spot route, so be ready to hit the corner or dig route breaking behind them. Motion or hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose a Cover 3 sky look to give yourself an extra vertical stretch option. Pair Mtn Mesh Spot with Mtn Deep Flood or Four Verticals in the same set to keep defenders honest, then come back to Mesh Spot once they start sitting on shorter zone drops.
