Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset lines up with 12 personnel, two wide receivers split outside and a tight end/wing look bunched to the formation strength. The diagram shows a zone blocking scheme across the offensive line with the running back taking a lateral mesh point handoff from the shotgun before pressing the play side A or B gap. This is a base zone run play designed to attack downhill running lanes off the linemen's zone steps, with the primary read being the play side double team and backside cutback lane based on how the defensive front flows.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the alignment of the play side linebacker and defensive tackle since a shaded nose or 3 technique can clog the primary running lane. Watch safety depth and rotation, since a single high safety cheating down into the box signals run support that can beat this play if unaccounted for. Post-snap, key the backside linebacker's pursuit angle since overrunning the play creates the cutback lane this scheme is designed to exploit. This play struggles against gap exchange fronts and cross crashing defensive linemen designed to blow up zone steps, so avoid calling it into heavy blitz packages that show mug looks at the line. If the defense shows an odd front with a user spy sitting in the backside A gap, expect the cutback to be taken away and plan to bounce the run outside instead.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since Inside Zone loses value against stacked fronts. Use motion from one of the outside receivers to identify man versus zone coverage before the snap, which also helps confirm if an extra defender is creeping into the box. Manually control the running back through the mesh point so you can press the play side gap and cut back if the backside linebacker overpursues. Pair this with PA Slide or PA Double Post out of the same Wing Flex Offset look so the defense has to respect play action off identical run action. Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the sticks and set up explosive shot plays later in the series.
