Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker first, since their leverage determines whether you stay outside or cut back inside. Identify the Mike linebacker depth and flow, if he is flowing hard with the zone action, look to cut back behind him for a big gain. This play beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that overpursue laterally, as well as defenses running Cover 3 or Cover 1 with linebackers keyed on run fits. It struggles against gap-sound defenses with disciplined defensive tackles who hold their gaps and against heavy inside blitzes that clog the interior before the zone can develop. Call this on early down and distance, especially first and second down, to stay on schedule and set up play action shots later in the series. If the defense shows heavy run blitz looks with linebackers crashing downhill, hot route the TE or slot receiver into a quick out or hitch as an outlet against overcommitted defenders. Mix in Bounce Read Option and Bounce Inside Zone from this set to keep defenders honest on the edge and prevent linebackers from keying the zone action too fast.
