Return RPO Alert Swing

Breakdown

Return RPO Alert Swing is a run pass option built off the inside zone run scheme out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex Close WK, giving the quarterback a pre and post snap alert to throw the swing route to the running back or hand the ball off. The offensive line executes standard zone blocking while the trips side runs off coverage to widen the alley for the swing route, making this both a zone beater against light boxes and a numbers-based answer to overloaded fronts. The primary read starts with the box count and second level flow: if the linebackers crash down on the run fake or the defense shows blitz, pull and fire the swing to the back immediately, otherwise let the zone run develop and stay on the handoff.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage expecting run, that is your green light to throw the swing immediately after the snap. Watch for a nickel or slot corner sitting in the flat, since a disciplined zone defender who does not bite on the run fake can jump the swing route and turn it into a negative play. Man coverage with the linebacker locked on the running back kills this concept, so check pre-snap for man alignment on the back and be ready to hand off instead of forcing the RPO throw. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since those defenders are usually late to react to the swing and give the quarterback a clean throwing lane. Identify safety rotation post-snap, if both safeties stay deep in a two-high shell the box should be light enough to trust the zone run instead of forcing the pass option.

Usage Tips

Count the defenders in the box before the snap and treat this as an automatic swing throw if there are six or more defenders stacked inside.

Use this on early downs like first and second and ten to stay ahead of the sticks without risking a sack, since the RPO gives you a built in checkdown against pressure.

If the defense shows a hard blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line, alert the swing pre-snap and get the ball out before the mesh point to punish aggressive fronts.

Pair this with Bounce Read Option and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect the run fake every time, which sets up the swing as a change of pace when linebackers start jumping the zone run.

Mix in Return Sprint TE Screen and HB Slip Screen later in a series once the defense starts sitting on the swing route, since those screens punish teams keying in on the RPO flow.
