Breakdown

Mtn Mesh Go's combines a classic mesh concept underneath with two vertical go routes tied into the trips side to stretch the field on both levels. The two shallow crossers create natural rubs to shake man defenders, while the go routes on the outside occupy deep coverage and open up space for the mesh runners against zone drops. This is a man beater first and foremost, though the deep shots make it a viable zone stretch play as well, and the primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath before working outside to the go routes if the safety bites down.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops from linebackers will clog the mesh crossers and force you to the go routes early. Identify if the corners are playing off man or press man, because press corners disrupt the mesh timing and favor a quicker checkdown read. Look for a single high safety rotating late, which signals man coverage underneath and tells you the mesh routes will have room to separate. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the mesh crossers, as this is the classic lurk threat that shuts this play down. Cover 3 with aggressive underneath zone drops is the toughest shell to beat here, while man coverage without a spy is where this play shines the most.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the mesh routes only fully unlock against man coverage. If you see two high safeties, key the deep go route on the boundary since a single high safety cannot cover both verticals and the mesh at the same time. Hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag if you are facing a heavy blitz look to give your quarterback a faster outlet. This play pairs well with Mtn Dagger and Mtn Fake Screen Wheel in the same set because those plays hit different levels and keep defenders guessing on mesh tendencies. Best called on second and medium to third and long when you need a chunk play but still have a built in checkdown against pressure.
