Return Sprint Comeback is a sprint out play-action style pass concept built around the trips receiver alignment closed to the formation. The comeback route from the boundary receiver breaks back toward the sideline at intermediate depth off a vertical stem, working as a natural man beater against off man coverage while the trips side provides a sprint action flood look to hold the flow of the defense. The primary read progression starts with the comeback against soft corners playing off, then works into the trips side flood combo underneath if the boundary defender sits on top of the route.
Read the corner depth pre snap, if he is lined up seven or more yards off the ball in soft zone or off man, the comeback will have plenty of room to work. Watch for user controlled corners baiting the comeback route by staying square, if they break too early on the route stem, look to double move or work the trips side flood instead. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with the boundary corner in a deep third or deep quarter, this coverage forces the comeback into a tight throwing window but still gives you a completion if you drive the throw on time. Watch linebacker flow to the trips side, if they widen out to cover the flood concept, the boundary comeback becomes even more isolated and easier to win against man leverage. Beware of Cover 2 with a hard flat defender sitting underneath the comeback route, that defender can undercut the break if the quarterback holds the ball too long after the sprint action.
Check corner alignment before the snap, this play thrives when you see off man or soft zone corners who will bite on the vertical stem before the comeback breaks back downhill. Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone or play off coverage to protect against the deep ball. Hot route the comeback receiver to a hitch if you see a hard press corner jumping the route early, that adjustment turns a low percentage throw into an easy completion.
