Mtn Dagger is a classic dagger concept run out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex Close WK, pairing a deep dig from the inline TE or slot receiver with a clearing vertical from the outside trips receiver to occupy the deep defender. The backside runs a speed out or drag as a checkdown against man pressure, while the offensive line slides protection to handle four man rushes. This is primarily a man beater that also stresses single high safety zone shells, with the primary read progression starting on the vertical clearout to identify the coverage shell, then working down to the dig sitting in the void created underneath, and finishing on the backside breaking route if the middle is capped.
Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, a shallow drop signals he can wall off the dig, so consider hot routing to the checkdown early. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high leaves the dig window open behind the linebackers while two high forces you to rely on the backside breaker. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the underneath passing lane, this lurk technique is the main counter to the dig route and should push your read to the vertical clearout or backside out. Recognize press man coverage on the outside trips receiver, this often means the safety has help over the top and the dig will need to sit down quicker against man coverage rules. Diagnose blitz packages by counting rushers post snap, if the offensive line is outnumbered get the ball out to the backside route immediately rather than waiting on the dig to develop.
Motion the flex TE pre-snap to confirm man versus zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation.
Use the vertical route on the outside trips receiver to hold the deep safety and open the window for the dig on third and medium to third and long situations.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out if you see a corner blitz or nano blitz look off the edge, giving you a fast release valve.
Pair this play with Switch Dagger in the same set to keep defenses guessing on which receiver runs the dig versus the clearout, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops.
Follow Mtn Dagger with Mtn Mesh Go's or China Y-Shake later in a series so defenders who cheat toward the dig get burned by crossing routes or double verticals.
