Read Y Corner is a trips-based passing concept out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex Close WK that isolates the tight end on a corner route as the primary progression read. The three receivers to the trips side run a combination that stretches the field horizontally and vertically, forcing zone defenders to widen while the boundary tight end works to the corner against man coverage. This is a man beater first, designed to attack single high looks and Cover 3 rotations where the corner route can split the deep third defender and the flat defender, and the quarterback progression starts with the Y corner before working back to any underneath breakers.
Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this tells you the deep defenders are likely playing Cover 1 or Cover 3 and the Y corner route can exploit the soft spot in the deep third. Watch the corner's press versus off alignment at the snap, off coverage on the tight end gives extra cushion for the corner route to break open against man beaters. Read the flat defender or curl to flat zone defender post-snap, if that defender sinks too deep the corner route will have a wide throwing lane underneath the safety. Look for two high safeties rotating down after the snap, this usually signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 which can squeeze the corner route and force a checkdown read. Key the weak side linebacker or nickel defender for lurk threats, a disciplined user controlled defender sitting in the passing lane can jump the corner route timing and bait an interception.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety the Y corner route has a great chance to win against man coverage or Cover 3 because it attacks the seam between the corner and the deep third defender.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose Cover 0 or a blitz look, this gives you a fast release valve when the corner route takes longer to develop.
Use this play on second and medium to second and long situations where you have time to let the corner route climb the ladder, avoid calling it on third and short since the route takes too long to hit.
Pair Read Y Corner with Stick or Verticals from the same set to keep defenders guessing, if the defense starts jumping the corner route after seeing it once, dial up Stick to attack the underneath zones the defense vacates.
Motion check the flexed tight end alignment to bait the defense into revealing man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you know you have a man beater matchup to exploit.
