Mtn HB Swing is a check down and screen style concept built out of the Trips TE Flex Close WK set that leans on the HB Swing route as its foundational outlet against pressure or aggressive man coverage. The Trips side occupies the defense vertically to clear underneath space while the running back releases out of the backfield to the flat, giving the quarterback an easy rhythm throw when the pocket collapses or a blitz is detected. This is primarily a man beater and hot route relief valve, with the primary read progression starting on the Trips concept for a big play shot before working immediately down to the HB Swing as the built-in checkdown against blitz looks.
Identify pre-snap whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking corner alignment on the Trips side, since tight press man alignment signals this play will hit for explosive yardage on a beaten route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who key the backfield can jump the HB Swing and blow up the checkdown for a loss. Key user controlled defenders flowing to the flat immediately after the snap, since a user lurk sitting on the swing route neutralizes the entire concept and forces you to work the Trips side instead. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the swing route is designed specifically to counter that pressure by getting the ball out before the rush arrives. Against zone shells with deep safety help over the top, respect the underneath zone defenders sinking into the flat, since sitting zone linebackers can undercut the swing route timing and create a turnover opportunity for the defense.

Read the defensive backfield pre-snap to see if the Trips side is getting bracketed by two deep safeties, which signals a zone shell that lets you look off the swing and attack downfield instead.
Hot route the backside TE or slot receiver into a quick out or drag if you see man coverage across the board, since this adds another quick option away from the blitz side.
Pair this play in sequence with Mtn Dagger or Mtn Mesh Go's from the same set so the defense respects the deep shots off Trips before you dial up the swing as a change of pace to bait aggressive linebackers.
