Same Side Zone is an outside zone run out of the Shotgun Trips TE Flex Close WK set that directs the offensive line to flow and block toward the same side as the running back's alignment, creating a stretch look with a natural cutback lane. The offensive line reach blocks defenders to that side while the running back reads the flow of the defensive line, looking to bounce outside if the edge is sealed or cut back against the grain if backside pursuit overruns the play. This is a run play designed to attack gap integrity, with the primary read progression starting at the playside edge defender (defensive end or outside linebacker), then the first and second level linebackers flowing to the ball.
Watch the playside defensive end and outside linebacker at the snap, if they crash hard down the line, plant and cut back through the vacated cutback lane. Key the flow of the middle linebacker, aggressive downhill linebackers who overpursue playside create a cutback window that this scheme is designed to exploit. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the running back or sitting in the backside gap, since a disciplined user defender reading zone flow can blow up the cutback lane and shut this run down. Against stacked fronts or run blitzes with extra defenders in the box, this play struggles because the zone blocking cannot consistently reach and seal every gap. Check safety depth pre-snap, if a safety is rotating down into the box as a run support defender, expect a quicker fill on the cutback side and consider audibling to a different concept.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive front to confirm the playside edge is not stacked with an extra run defender before snapping this play.
Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts without heavy blitz indicators since Same Side Zone loses value against aggressive gap-shooting blitz packages that beat zone blocking with penetration.
Hot route the flexed TE into a quick stalk or chip block if you see a walked up linebacker threatening the edge, since this keeps the zone stretch intact instead of getting immediately blown up.
Pair this play with Bounce Read Option or Inside Zone from the same set to keep defenders guessing between stretch runs and downhill zone runs, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want balanced offense that also sets up RPO Read Bubble or Read Y Corner off similar run action later in the series.
