RPO Peek Bubble is an RPO out of Shotgun Trey Open HB Str that gives the QB a true run/pass conflict read on the play side flat defender. The diagram shows the HB running an inside zone track that bends outside behind the line, the slot receiver peeking a quick out toward the sideline, and the outside receiver working an out and up (sluggo style) release to stretch the corner vertically after selling the bubble threat. The backside X receiver runs a vertical stem to hold the single high safety, and the QB progression starts by reading the peek defender: if he sits or crashes down on the bubble, throw the peek out route, if he widens with the bubble action, hand off inside zone.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot defender over the peek receiver pre-snap: if he is walked up tight in run support, he is likely crashing on the bubble action and the peek out will be open behind him. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety rotation tells you the backside vertical route is a decoy holding structure rather than a real target, so key the trips side entirely. Post-snap, identify user-controlled defenders flying downhill on the HB path since that confirms the run is sold and the QB should be looking to throw immediately. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with aggressive flat defenders get exposed by the peek out, but Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with disciplined zone drops can sit on both the bubble and the peek route simultaneously. Look for nano blitzes or fast inside pressure up front, since the RPO read window collapses quickly and a free rusher can force a bad decision before the QB reads the peek defender.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify the flat or peek defender on the trips side and decide before the snap whether he is aligned to jump the bubble or sit on the peek route.
Use this against teams that key run heavily off HB alignment since the bubble action combined with the peek route punishes linebackers and slot corners who crash downhill too fast.
Hot route the backside X receiver into a quick hitch or slant on obvious passing downs if the defense shows two high safeties, since his vertical stem alone will not create separation against soft zone.
Pair this call with RPO Zone Peek Bubble and RPO Alert Smoke from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the bubble key, forcing linebackers to hesitate every snap.
Best used on early downs (first and ten or second and short) since the inside zone hand off keeps you on schedule if the pass read is not there, and the peek out is a safe checkdown against blitz looks.
