DBL Ins is a Trey Open HB Str concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel that sends both outside receivers vertical off the snap on go routes to occupy the corners and hold the deep safeties, while the two inside receivers (the TE and slot) break in on in routes at different depths, creating a stacked crossing read over the middle. The deeper in route from the outside slot man clears out space for the shorter in from the TE, giving the quarterback a natural high low read against zone or a pick style natural separation against man coverage. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the natural rub created by the two in routes crossing depths, though it also holds up against zone by settling the shallower in route in the hole behind linebackers. Defensive Reads

Watch for user controlled linebackers sitting in the shallow in route window, since this is the first throw defenders will try to jump. Two high safety shells with corners playing off tend to surrender the shallow in route easily, while single high with aggressive underneath zone drops can clog both in routes. Press man coverage on the TE is a green light, since the rub from the two in routes almost always creates a step of separation. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge remove underneath defenders, opening throwing lanes for both in routes, but also shrink the quarterback's time to read the full progression. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, the deeper in route from the slot becomes the primary window since the shallow in route can get squeezed by the flat to hook defender.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium to third and medium when linebackers are likely to sit in short zones and open up the shallow in route window.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot cornerback and the middle linebacker, if they are shaded outside or bailing deep, the shallow in route sits wide open underneath.

Against man coverage, trust the natural rub between the two in routes to spring the shallow crosser free, especially versus press man on the TE.

If both safeties show two high shell pre-snap, hot route one of the outside go routes into a comeback or hitch to punish soft corners playing off.

Pair this play with Short Cross or Stick from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between shallow crossers and quick in cuts, then hit DBL Ins later in the series once they start jumping the short stuff.

Use audibles to bring an outside go route into a slant if you see a blitz look, giving the quarterback a faster answer against pressure.
