Breakdown
DBL Ins comes out of Shotgun Trey Open HB Str with the two boundary receivers running vertical stems that break into the middle of the field on in routes at different depths, creating a natural high low read against zone or a rub against man coverage. Both outside receivers bend inward while the backside protection stays in to pass block, giving the QB a clean pocket to work the deep in first and the shallow in second. This is a man beater built on the crossing traffic to shake defenders on the rub, but it also stresses zone defenders who have to sink and wall off two receivers occupying the same throwing lane. Primary read progression starts with the deeper in route breaking away from the sideline, then works down to the underneath in if the deep window is closed by a linebacker or safety sinking into the throwing lane.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check for two high safeties since that shell often leaves a linebacker isolated in the deep middle throwing lane that this play attacks. Watch cornerback depth at the snap, if they are playing off coverage they will have time to squeeze the in routes and disrupt the rub before separation is created. Post snap, track the middle linebacker or nickel defender for a lurk drop into the shallow in route since a disciplined zone drop can bait the QB into a turnover. Man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, the crossing routes create natural traffic that defenders in man coverage struggle to fight through. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a hard sinking linebacker take away the deep in route, forcing the QB down to the shorter in and inviting a tackle for minimal gain if the defense rallies fast.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells before the snap because the deep in route will have a clear throwing lane if the safety is rotated to the opposite hash.
Use the hot route to convert the shallow in into a spot or option route against zone heavy defenses that like to sink linebackers into short middle windows.
This play pairs well with Four Verticals and Slot Fade in the same set since both stress vertical shells, forcing defenses to respect the deep ball before you come back to the in routes.
Run this on second and medium or third and short to medium since the routes need a full route stem to develop the rub and separation.
Against man coverage, snap the ball quickly and trust the natural crossing traffic to create separation instead of holding the ball waiting for extra space.
