Z Spot out of Shotgun Tight Doubles is a classic Spot concept built to attack Cover 3 zone drops. The backside receiver runs a corner route up the sideline while the slot defender snaps off a quick out breaking to the flat, and the TE sits down at a hitch to fill the shallow zone underneath. On the strong side, one receiver clears vertically up the seam while the other runs a shallow drag across the field into the flat opposite the corner route. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to see if the flat defender bites on the shorter routes, then works down to the flat and finally to the underneath drag as your check down.

Defensive Reads

Cover 3 is the primary shell this beats since the spot concept floods the underneath zones and stretches the flat defender horizontally. Watch the slot defender at the snap, if he sinks too deep the flat route will be wide open for an easy completion. Man coverage with underneath help can clog the drag and hitch, so be ready to climb the ladder to the corner route against Cover 1 or Cover 2 man. Blitz-heavy fronts that send extra rushers off the edge open a quick throwing lane to the TE hitch or flat route as a built-in answer versus pressure. If the safety rotates down pre-snap into the box, expect single high looks and prioritize the corner route beating the sideline defender.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short to attack zone-heavy defenses without overcommitting to a deep shot.

Presnap identify if the corner is sitting on the corner route or bailing deep, since Cover 3 zone defenders will widen late and open the window underneath.

Hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route against man coverage to create natural separation off traffic near the line.

Pair this play with HB Angle or HB Quick Base in the same set to keep linebackers honest against the flat and force conflict in coverage.

Against Cover 3 lurk defenders, work the ball quickly to the flat route before the underneath defender can settle into the spot window.

Use motion or a hard count to bait safeties into rotating early, then throw the corner route if the zone shows single high with soft outside leverage.
