Tight Flood is a vertical flood concept out of Shotgun Tight Doubles that stacks three receivers into the same side of the field to overload one deep zone third. The backside receiver runs a deep dig across the field, the inside slot releases vertically before sitting into a corner route at the boundary, and the outside receiver runs a short out to the flat, creating a high low flood read on one side of the field while the running back releases to the opposite flat on a check release. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the flood concept to put the flat, curl, and deep third defenders in conflict, with the primary read progressing from the deep corner route to the flat route underneath as the coverage rotates.
Defensive Reads
Identify the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety strongly suggests Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this flood concept is designed to stress. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the corner route the underneath flat throw will be wide open against zone drops. Key the corner over the flooded side, if he presses at the line and mirrors the corner route rather than gaining depth, expect Cover 1 or man coverage where the deep dig becomes your best answer. Look for a linebacker or nickel blitzing off the edge on the flood side, since Tight Flood has no immediate hot protection to that side and quick pressure can force an early checkdown. Against Cover 4 or two high shells, the flood routes get squeezed into tight windows, so be ready to work the deep dig on the backside instead of forcing the ball into the flood.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect Cover 3 or a single high safety shell, since the flood puts immediate stress on the deep third defender. Pre-snap, check the corner over the outside receiver, if he is playing off with outside leverage the flat route will be open quickly against zone drops. Use the deep dig as your outlet against man coverage since it crosses the field away from the flood and can pick up natural rubs versus man defenders. Hot route the running back into a flat route if the defense shows blitz, giving you a fast checkdown against pressure looks. Pair this play with Curl or Browns Curl from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a true flood concept and a curl flat combination, both of which attack the same underneath zones differently.
