Breakdown

Shot Fade Cross lines up out of Shotgun Tight Doubles with three routes to the play side. The outside receiver runs a fade up the sideline as a vertical shot route, while the inside receiver breaks outside on a corner route that crosses underneath the fade, and the third receiver runs a deep crossing route working from one side of the formation all the way across the field. The backside X receiver runs a curl up the sideline as the lone route on that side. Primary read progression starts with the fade for the deep shot, works down to the corner route sitting behind the cross, and comes back to the deep crosser as the outlet against zone coverage that widens out.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety depth and leverage, a single high safety cheating to the fade side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and opens the corner route and deep crosser. Two safeties split evenly pre-snap usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which invites a throw to the deep crosser sitting in the seam behind the underneath defenders. Key the flow of linebackers after the snap, if they sink hard with the crosser it opens a throwing lane to the corner route working behind them. Man coverage shows tight press alignment on the outside receivers, favoring the fade route on a one on one matchup if your receiver has a size or speed advantage. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the deep crosser lane or jumping the corner route break, since both routes cross into a similar area and can bait a turnover if the defense sits in a sim pressure look with a spy underneath.

Usage Tips

Use this play in third and long or two minute situations where you need an explosive shot play down the field.

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see a single high safety shaded to the fade side, throw off the corner route sitting underneath since the fade will be covered.

Against two high shells, look immediately to the deep crosser working away from the safety help since it stretches zone defenders horizontally.

Hot route the backside curl into a deeper comeback if you are facing off man coverage to give yourself a simple check down away from the trash.

Pair this with HB Angle or HB Draw earlier in a drive to soften the pass rush, then dial up Shot Fade Cross once the defense starts biting on quick game to hit the fade or crosser for a big play.
