Shot Fade Cross out of Shotgun Tight Doubles is a three-man route concept built around a deep fade from the boundary receiver and a deep crossing route from the slot that clears the middle of the field. The backside receiver runs a corner route breaking away from the crosser, creating a natural clear-out for the deep cross while the fade stretches the sideline vertically. This is a man beater first, since the fade wins one-on-one against outside leverage and the deep cross exploits any trail technique or late safety help, though the crosser also settles into soft spots against zone shells if the deep defenders bail too early. Primary progression starts with the fade on an isolated matchup, then works to the deep cross as it crosses the field, with the corner route as a change-up read if the safety jumps the crosser.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high look, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 give extra help over the fade and crosser that can shut this concept down. Watch cornerback alignment on the fade route, tight press man with outside leverage is the toughest matchup for this route, while soft coverage or inside leverage opens the back shoulder throw. Key the middle linebacker and any user-controlled defender dropping into the deep middle third, a disciplined zone drop that stays on top of the crosser takes away the primary read. Recognize man coverage rotations post-snap, if the defense sends a blitz and leaves the crosser in a man matchup against a slower linebacker, that route becomes an explosive mismatch. Beware of Cover 1 or Cover 3 with a rover or lurking defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since a well-timed jump on the deep cross can bait an interception if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Usage Tips
Check the cornerback depth pre-snap on the fade side, if he is playing off man or trail technique the fade wins immediately on a back shoulder throw.
Look for single high safety shells before the snap, this play thrives when there is no second deep defender to help over the top on the fade or crosser.
Use the deep cross as your primary answer against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops where the underneath defenders sink and open a soft window in the middle.
Pair this play with Curl or DBL Stick earlier in a series so the defense sees short, quick-game concepts, then hit them with the double move stress of Shot Fade Cross when they start jumping underneath routes.
Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need an explosive gain, since all three routes take time to develop and the concept is not designed for a quick, safe checkdown.
