Identify man versus zone by watching the linebackers at the snap, man coverage defenders will bail with their assignments and vacate the box, creating natural cutback lanes for the HB. Look for a spy or a defender staying home in the middle of the field, since a disciplined spy is the primary counter to draw and will erase the delayed handoff advantage. Post snap, track whether the defensive line is selling hard upfield on the pass rush, heavy pass rush teams that get too deep in their rush create the biggest cutback windows. Beware of nano blitzes or interior line stunts that collapse the pocket instantly, since those disrupt the blocking climb and can meet the HB before he ever gets to the second level.
