Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop indicates he is sitting on the stick route and you should look to the seam instead. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the stick concept, which is the biggest threat to this play in competitive lobbies. Blitz-heavy fronts with only zone coverage behind them get exposed because the outside routes clear space for a fast stick throw before pressure arrives. Press man coverage on the outside receivers can disrupt the timing of the clearout routes, so watch for jammed releases that delay the seam read.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since the outside clearout routes are designed to pull corners and safeties out of the middle of the field. Against Cover 2 or Cover 3, prioritize the seam route up top before the underneath zone closes the window. Against man coverage, work the stick route quickly since the tight end should win separation off the initial break against linebackers. Use hot routes to convert the stick route into a flat route if you see a linebacker sitting directly on top of the route in Tampa 2 or Cover 4 looks. Pair this play with HB Angle or Curl from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and vertical shots off similar formation motion.
