HB Angle out of Shotgun Tight Doubles is a check down and rhythm passing concept built around the running back releasing out of the backfield on an angle route while the rest of the formation runs off coverage with vertical and crossing routes. This is a man beater at its core, since the angle route from the HB creates natural separation against linebackers in man coverage by breaking away from the defender's momentum. The primary read progression starts with the HB angle route against linebacker or nickel matchups, then works to the underneath crosser or in cut if the backfield defender flows with the running back, and finally to the deep shots on the outside if the defense sells out to stop the angle route.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage from linebackers is the biggest weakness for this play, so key the Mike and Will linebacker depth and alignment before the snap to confirm man responsibility on the HB. Cover 3 and other zone shells with a sitting hook defender can undercut the angle route, so if the linebacker stays home in a zone drop instead of chasing the running back, look to the crossing route or check the ball down to the flat instead. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow area, since a smart user will sit on the angle route and jump the throw the moment the QB commits, punishing predictable reads. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge or through the A gap can disrupt this play because the HB is needed as a route runner, not a blocker, so identify pressure looks pre snap and consider a hot route to keep the back in if the protection is outmatched. Safety rotation to the play side flat is a sign the defense is selling out on the angle route, which opens up the deep outside shots as the counter punch.

Usage Tips

Attack this play on early downs and third and short situations where linebackers are more likely to be in man coverage on the running back. Pre snap, identify if the defense shows Mike or Sam linebacker walked up over the HB alignment, since that confirms man coverage responsibility and sets up the angle route to win easily. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see Cover 3 shell, since the angle route loses value against zone drops that sit underneath. Use motion on the HB before the snap to see if a linebacker follows across the formation, which is a clear man coverage tell that should make you throw the angle route with confidence. Pair this play with HB Draw and HB Slip Screen from the same set so the defense has to respect the run action, which slows down linebacker reactions to the angle release.
