PA WR Cross out of Shotgun Tight Doubles is a play-action passing concept built around a deep crossing route as the primary attack. Off the play fake, the boundary receiver runs a shallow to deep crosser that stems across the entire field, while both outside receivers stack vertical routes up the numbers to hold the safeties and clear underneath space. A shorter drag or flat route from the slot gives the quarterback a quick outlet away from the crosser's side, and the diagram shows no screen or RPO elements, confirming this is a straight play-action shot play designed to hit off run fakes. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the middle, then works to the flat route underneath if the crosser is taken away by man coverage or a zone drop.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap; if they sit shallow and bite on the run fake, the crossing route will have a wide throwing lane behind them. Key the safeties before the snap; a single high safety struggles to cover the deep crosser and the vertical routes at the same time, creating explosive play opportunities. Against man coverage, look for a user controlled defender trailing the crosser late; if the defender flips his hips early, the throw window closes fast. Cover 3 zone drops can be a problem shell because a hook or curl defender can sit right in the crosser's path, so check the underneath flat route as your zone beater outlet. Be wary of a nano blitz or fast interior pressure package that beats the play fake; if the offensive line cannot hold up, the quarterback needs to get to the flat route immediately instead of waiting on the crosser.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel counts so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties before they can drop into coverage.
Presnap, identify if the defense is showing a two high shell; if safeties are rotated to one side, throw the crosser away from the rotation for a bigger window.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, trust the crosser and lead the receiver across the field rather than throwing it flat footed.
