Inside Zone from Shotgun Tight Doubles lines up with the HB offset in the backfield next to the QB, two receivers split wide to each side, and a tight formation up front with a TE attached. The red arrow shows the HB taking a downhill zone track through the playside gap as the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit to seal running lanes and create a wall for the back to press and cut off. This is a pure run play built to attack the interior, with the primary read being the playside double team and the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Pre-snap, count the box and identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front like 46 Bear or a heavy blitz look, both of which can blow up the interior lanes before the back gets to the line. Key the defensive tackles and nose alignment, if they are shaded hard playside the zone blocking scheme struggles to get movement and the cutback becomes the primary lane. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are crashing downhill immediately this play gets stuffed, but if they are reading and drifting it hits fast for positive yardage. User the middle linebacker or a safety in the box to spy the cutback lane, since the biggest gains on Inside Zone come when the back bounces backside untouched. Cover 1 and Cover 3 with an extra run defender in the box, along with any nano blitz package that sends immediate interior pressure, are the best defensive answers to this play.
Check the box count before the snap and only run Inside Zone into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box. Use your hot route to check the HB's aiming point if you see a defensive tackle shaded hard into the playside gap. Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where linebackers are stacked deep, since the zone blocking scheme gets clean movement on straight run fits. Pair this with HB Draw and HB Slip Screen from the same set so defenses cannot sit on run reads without opening up window for a big cutback or bounce. Mix in PA WR Cross or PA Deep Curls off the same look to punish linebackers who bite hard on the zone run fake.
