On the right side the outside receiver runs a corner route up the sideline while the inner receiver settles into a spot route in the flat area at the sticks. The design is a classic man beater built off natural traffic from the mesh, but it also has answers versus zone with the spot route sitting in soft areas of Cover 3. Primary read starts with the mesh crossers underneath, then works to the spot route as the intermediate check down, with the corner route as the low percentage shot play if a defender bites on the shorter routes.

Cover 3 zone defenses are vulnerable to the spot route sitting in the flat to hook window, so identify the flat defender depth and throw with anticipation before the zone rotates back downhill. Cover 2 shells with hard corners can squeeze the mesh routes and limit yards after catch, so be ready to check it down or use the sideline route as a vertical answer against soft safety help. Blitz heavy packages that bring extra rushers off the edge leave the shallow mesh routes open as a hot route answer, so keep your eyes on the mesh crossers immediately if you diagnose pressure pre snap.

Usage Tips

Use pre snap motion or a hard count to identify if defenders are in man or zone before the snap, since the mesh concept only fully wrecks man coverage. If you see press man corners with linebackers shaded tight to the box, trust the mesh crossers to win early and get the ball out fast. Against zone shells like Cover 3, work through your mesh read quickly and settle into the spot route at the sticks since it sits in the natural void between underneath zones. This play shines on third and short to third and medium since the spot route is schemed to convert first downs at the sticks.
