Breakdown
Bench out of Shotgun Tight Doubles is a horizontal stretch concept designed to attack sideline to sideline with a clear high-low progression on one side of the field. The two outside receivers run bench routes (out cuts to the sideline at different depths), while the inside receiver on the right runs a deep corner route to occupy the deep defender, and the TE runs a corner/flag route from the other side to stretch the defense vertically and horizontally at once. The QB reads from the deep corner route down to the shallow bench route underneath, making this a zone beater that punishes teams sitting in Cover 3 or Cover 4 by flooding one third of the field with three levels of routes.
Defensive Reads
Identify the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety tips Cover 3 which this flood concept is built to exploit. Watch the flat defender on the flood side, if he sinks with the corner route the bench route underneath should be wide open. Key the cornerback depth at the snap, off coverage or zone drops signal an easy completion on the shallow out route. User linebackers dropping into the passing lanes can disrupt the timing of the underneath bench route, so be ready to climb the progression to the corner route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is a green light to attack the deep corner route immediately since it isolates the defender vertically.
Usage Tips
Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap since the flood concept on the right side is designed to overload one zone defender with multiple route levels.
Use the corner route as your first read against single-high safety looks, then work down to the bench route underneath if the corner is taken away.
This play pairs well with Curl or DBL Stick from the same set since those plays hit the middle of the field and punish defenses that overplay the flood side.
Against man coverage, hot route the backside out route into a slant or dig to give yourself a quick answer if the corner and flood routes are covered.
Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium when you have time to let the deep corner route develop and still have a checkdown underneath.
