Breakdown
Mtn Cross HB Sneak lines up out of Shotgun Tight Doubles with 11 personnel and shows a deep crossing route (gold) breaking from the left side all the way across the field to a vertical stem, a shallow drag/crosser (light blue) working from the right side underneath, and a comeback route (dark blue) sitting down in the middle of the field. The HB releases on a red route to the flat/checkdown area while the line slides to protect, giving this the look of a play-action style crossing concept built to stress zone defenders with horizontal traffic and picks at the intermediate level. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser (gold) working across the field, moves to the shallow crosser (light blue) if the deep route is capped, and checks down to the HB in the flat as the outlet against pressure, making this a zone beater that also holds up against man coverage due to the natural rub created by the crossing routes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: two high safeties usually means zone coverage underneath, which opens throwing lanes for the deep crosser. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops from linebackers can jump the light blue crosser if they read the quarterback's eyes early. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field (lurk technique), as this player is coached to jump the deep crosser and can bait a bad read. Man coverage with press corners is vulnerable to the natural rub created by the crossing routes, but tight man coverage with no help over the top can still contest the deep crosser downfield. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the HB's route to the flat becomes the emergency outlet against pressure when the crossers are not open in time.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since the crossers create natural picks against man coverage but need void space to work against zone.
If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 shell), prioritize the deep crosser (gold) working to the opposite hash since it will stress the seams between zone defenders.
Against man coverage, trust the rub from the crossing routes and look to hit the shallow crosser (light blue) quickly before user defenders can chase over the top.
This play works best on second and medium or third and short since the shallow crosser and HB outlet give you a quick, high percentage completion if the deep crosser is blanketed.
Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Mtn Cross HB Sneak once they start biting on run fakes.
