Breakdown

Slants out of Shotgun Doubles Flex is a quick-hitting man beater built on double slant routes from both outside receivers, with the two inside slot receivers running short outs to the boundary to clear space underneath. The backside slant (red) is the primary route, working against off man or inside leverage corners, while the frontside slant mirrors it to give the QB a two-way go based on which side the defense overplays. With no play-action or screen elements shown, this is a pure quick-game passing concept designed to get the ball out in under two seconds against blitz or man pressure.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth pre-snap, since two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 where the slants can get squeezed by underneath linebackers sitting in the throwing lanes. Watch corner leverage at the snap, inside shade corners will jump the slant route immediately so be ready to work the out route on that side instead. Key the linebackers for blitz indicators, if they crash the box on a run blitz look the quick slants punish that aggression before the rush arrives. User-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook or curl zones can lurk and undercut the slant, so read their positioning before committing to the backside throw. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing Mike linebacker can clog the middle read, so shift focus to the out routes on either flank when you see the strong safety rotate down into the box pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing outside shade or inside shade, since slants only work cleanly against outside leverage or off man coverage.

Use this play on 3rd and short to medium since the slant and out combo gets the ball out fast and picks up positive yardage before the pocket collapses.

Hot route the outs to sit down quicker against zone drops if you see Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells post-snap, since the base out routes can drift too wide against soft zone.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or 45 Quick Base earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick slant timing, then hit them with Four Verticals or PA Dagger once they start jumping the short routes.

Against Cover 0 or man blitz looks, throw the backside slant immediately off the snap since it is the fastest route to separation and beats blitzing linebackers before they can drop into coverage.
